  • Goods Train Driver Applies Emergency Brake As Gas Cylinder Found On Track

    An empty gas cylinder was found on the tracks by a goods train loco pilot, who applied emergency brakes and stopped the train near Prempur railway station in Kanpur on Sunday, the second such incident in Uttar Pradesh this month.

    Police said the incident occurred at 8:10 am when the train was going to Allahabad from Kanpur.

    “It was found that the cylinder was of five-kilogramme capacity and empty. It was removed from the track. The matter is being investigated,” the local police said in a statement.

    Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Shrawan Kumar Singh said, “The loco pilot alerted the railway officials who passed the information to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Kanpur police, which launched the investigation into the matter.” On September 8, an attempt was made to derail the Kalindi Express, heading towards Bhiwani from Prayagraj, by placing an LPG cylinder on the tracks.

    The train hit the cylinder before coming to a screeching halt. The cylinder was thrown off the tracks after it was hit by the train.The police took note of the video and arrested the men seen in the video. The men have been identified as Tanay Chaurasiya, Abhishek Verma, Yogesh Vishwakarma, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Har Govind Tiwari, and Shiva Tripathi, all from the Kakadeo police station area. They have admitted to the crime, the police said, adding they are trying to catch the other accused.

  • IIT Kanpur’s New Facility To Drive Data-Driven Policies With Census Insights

    Aiming to enhance research capabilities by providing academicians, researchers, and students with access to vital census data, the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, to establish a census data research workstation at its Computer Centre.

    With this initiative, IIT Kanpur became the first technology institute in Uttar Pradesh and the third among central universities and institutes in the state to set up a Census Data Research Workstation. This is the fifth such facility in Uttar Pradesh, alongside similar workstations at Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, Bundelkhand University, and DDU Gorakhpur University.

    The Census Data Research Workstation at IIT Kanpur offers access to published census tables and micro-level data from 1991 to 2011 in a digital format. This resource enables detailed analysis of socio-economic and demographic trends, supporting research that contributes to data-driven policy-making and developmental program evaluations.

    Professor Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, “We are honoured to partner with the Ministry of Home Affairs for this crucial initiative. This collaboration is a testament to IIT Kanpur’s dedication to data-driven research and innovation. The Census Data Research Workstation will serve as an invaluable resource for researchers and students, equipping them with access to extensive data for meaningful research and policy development.”

    The new facility adds to the over 30,000 tables and 8,000+ articles and summaries already available on the official website of the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner (censusindia.gov.in). It enhances access to essential datasets, strengthening IIT Kanpur’s dynamic research ecosystem and its role in supporting India’s development initiatives.

  • IIT Kanpur Placement 2024: 579 Students Placed On Day 1, Including 13 In International Roles

    The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has maintained its impressive placement record, with students receiving a total of 579 job offers by the end of Day 1 of this year’s placement season.

    According to a release by the premier technical institute, a total of 523 students are being offered positions through a combination of campus placements and pre-placement offers (PPOs). Among these, 199 students stood out by accepting PPOs from leading national and international firms. Adding to the institute’s global reputation, 13 students received international job offers, highlighting the global demand for IIT Kanpur’s exceptional talent.

    The first day witnessed enthusiastic participation from 74 blue-chip organizations. Industry leaders such as Microsoft, Texas Instruments, Databricks, Google, American Express, SLB, and Deutsche Bank have emerged as the top recruiters, highlighting the exceptional quality of IIT Kanpur’s talent pool.

    The Stenography Proficiency Test requires transcribing a 10-minute dictation at 80 words per minute in either English or Hindi. While the stenography test is qualifying in nature, only candidates who clear it will be considered for merit ranking based on their written exam performance. In case of tie scores, the merit list will be determined by factors such as fewer negative marks, older date of birth, earlier acquisition of essential qualification, and alphabetical order of candidates’ first names.

    The official notification reads: “All the applicants are advised to satisfy themselves before applying that they possess the essential qualifications and other conditions stipulated in the advertisement laid down for the posts as on the last date of receipt of the online application. No interim enquiry asking for advice on eligibility will be entertained. The prescribed essential qualifications/experiences are the minimum, and selection is done through open competition. Therefore, mere possession of the minimum education qualification/experience does not entitle candidates for selection to the post.”  

  • Portion Of British-Era Bridge Connecting Unnao And Kanpur Collapses

    A portion of a historic bridge on the Ganga connecting Kanpur and Unnao, built during the British period, fell into the river in the early hours of Tuesday, locals said.

    The bridge, which had been closed for almost four years, collapsed around 2 am. No untoward incident was reported due to the incident, they said.

    Locals claimed that the bridge near the Ganga ghat was built in 1874 by the Avadh and Rohilkhand Railway Limited Company in the Shuklaganj area of Unnao district.Ashu Awasthi, a local, said, “A portion between two pillars of the bridge fell into the Ganga after 2 am. No one was hurt as the bridge was closed for traffic.” Another local, Panda Raju, said the bridge was closed in 2021 after cracks appeared.

    At that time, it was known through the media that deep cracks were found in rooms 2, 10, 17 and 22 from the Kanpur side, due to which the administration completely closed the bridge on April 5, 2021,” he added.

    As the portion of the bridge collapsed in the Ganga, a number of locals made their way near the spot and made videos of the structure. The clips and photographs of the structure soon found their way to social media.

    While there was no immediate statement from any government body over the matter, Krishna Kumar, who lives along the riverbank, said some officers came to the site in the morning in a Lucknow-registered vehicle.

    “They went near the broken part and left after some time,” Mr Kumar claimed
